The Milgis Trust has many grassroot projects in the pipeline, all of which work towards our ultimate goal of rebalancing the magical Milgis ecosystem; providing security and support for the people and wildlife, whilst improving livelihoods and preserving traditions.
The main activities are:
- Milgis Trust Core Operations & Scouts
- Wildlife Projects
- Drinking Water Projects
- Land management & Erosion Projects
- Eco-Screen Community Awareness Projects
- Women’s Art & Craft Projects
- School Projects
- Education Sponsorships
On top of these vital projects the Milgis Trust is focusing hard to secure funding and support for these three following objectives:
- Veterinary Projects;
- Lturoto’s & Kisima Projects (emergency water resource)
“The Samburu are skilled stockmen and deserve better veterinary services to combat endemic diseases. They need advice on how to improve quality rather than quantity of their livestock, but their temperamental aversion to selling it must be discouraged. This would stop the degradation of the grasslands. It would also bring the Samburu into the money economy of today, forcing them to place less reliance on cattle as the sole arbiter of a man’s wealth. However this departure from their tradition will only be achieved if the livestock marketing facilities in the district are greatly improved.” *
- Family Planning Clinics
The Samburu require considerable financial and material support to build dams and develop water catchment areas. Since almost half Kenya’s land mass is semi-desert, it seems strange that the international aid agencies have not done more in this field. The storage of floodwaters from seasonal rivers would have a major impact on the economy of the region and benefit those living there.” *
“the Samburu need better health facilities and, of special concern, advice on family planning. The present growth of the population is unsustainable and has to be readressed.” *
